Barnegat Light is where LBI slows down and life becomes more intentional. Tucked at the northern tip of the island, this bayside village moves at its own peaceful pace. Locals wake to the hum of fishing boats, savor sunsets over the bay, and know their neighbors by name. With wide beaches, nature trails, and a true sense of community, Barnegat Light draws those looking to reconnect with the simple joys of island living. Whether you're walking to Viking Village for fresh seafood or biking through quiet streets lined with coastal cottages, this part of LBI feels worlds away — in the best way.

Fun Fact: Barnegat Light has a separate zip code (08006) than the rest of the island (08008). This is one of many nuances to this local market!

Location: Shorter blocks with quick walks to the beach and entertainment in town. A bike ride away to Beach Haven and a short drive to the bridge.

Rental market: There is a strong rental market with all of the local amenities and short walks to the beach. Highlight the conveniences in town and nearby necessities such as ACME (our main food store), the post office, or St. Francis church and community center.

Lot sizes: There is a mix of different lot sizes in Brant Beach and many of them support new construction. There are lots with 40 feet of frontage and ones with 70 feet of frontage. We have completed several new construction projects in Brant Beach and it is a location to keep an eye on if new construction is top of mind.

History

Barnegat Light is one of the oldest settlement areas on Long Beach Island, first explored by the Dutch in the 1600s. Its name comes from a Danish word meaning “inlet of the breakers,” referring to the rough waters of Barnegat Inlet. These dangerous conditions led to the construction of a lighthouse in the early 1800s, later replaced by the current 172-foot Barnegat Lighthouse—designed by General George Meade and completed in 1859. Known as “Old Barney,” it was re-lit in 2009 after being dark since 1944.

The town began to take shape in 1881 with the Barnegat City Improvement Company, which laid out the current street grid. It became an independent borough in 1904 and changed its name from Barnegat City to Barnegat Light in 1948. Today, the town is known for its preserved dunes, peaceful atmosphere, rich fishing heritage, and iconic lighthouse.
