History

Barnegat Light is one of the oldest settlement areas on Long Beach Island, first explored by the Dutch in the 1600s. Its name comes from a Danish word meaning “inlet of the breakers,” referring to the rough waters of Barnegat Inlet. These dangerous conditions led to the construction of a lighthouse in the early 1800s, later replaced by the current 172-foot Barnegat Lighthouse—designed by General George Meade and completed in 1859. Known as “Old Barney,” it was re-lit in 2009 after being dark since 1944.

The town began to take shape in 1881 with the Barnegat City Improvement Company, which laid out the current street grid. It became an independent borough in 1904 and changed its name from Barnegat City to Barnegat Light in 1948. Today, the town is known for its preserved dunes, peaceful atmosphere, rich fishing heritage, and iconic lighthouse.
